Five Ways to up Your Game

It’s time to up your game on the ocean.  Pick up new boating skills, or hone old ones.

Here are 5 skills you could improve.  Pick one or two, and use these pre-holiday weeks to up your game.

  1. Master your chartplotter.  Learn the menus, get rid of factory default settings, and configure it to serve your specific needs.  Use the manual.

  2. Set up your radio with an MMSI number, and learn to use the scanner.

  3. Get a paper chart of your home waters, and tack it to your wall for the winter.  Look at it often and by spring, you'll have a mental map of your home waters.

  4. Read a book.  I suggest Waves and Beaches (Bascom and McCoy), or Tides and the Ocean (William Thomson)

  5. Organize your waypoints and back them up on a computer or memory card.  If you're not using waypoints yet, learn how.

Youtube is your friend.  But if you want a one-stop professional overhaul of your skills, a Private Coaching program will get you there in 6 weeks.
